Rashad Trice, 26 of Detroit, is facing numerous charges out of Macomb and Ingham Counties for assaulting his ex-girlfriend before kidnapping and killing her 2-year-old daughter.

Police say that after he was arrested, he refused to cooperate with investigators while a frantic search was ongoing to 2-year-old Wynter Smith.

The Macomb County Prosecutors Office authorized charges shorty after the Ingham County Prosecutors Office did the same.

Trice is still held in Macomb County where the Macomb County Prosecutors Office said arraignment was possible for today.

The Attorney Generals Office plans to hold the cases from both counties in the same court room to save the victims family from having to travel throughout the area continuously.

Trice was on probation at the time of the homicide and has been in and out of jail since 2021 with multiple similar charges related to domestic violence (on Wynters mother) and resisting police. In the last 2 years, Trice was locked up on at least five separate occasions for fighting with police.

The Michigan Department of Corrections says Rashad checked in with his probation officer in June and his next date to check up was mid-July.

The body of Wynter was located by the FBI in an overgrown alleyway on Detroits east side.

More charges are expected soon related to the kidnapping and homicide of Wynter, and the large investigation continues throughout multiple jurisdictions.
