Standoff between police and suicidal male comes to an end after four hours

 

UPDATED AT 5:15 p.m.

UTICA — Utica Police successfully talked a suicidal male into peacefully surrendering after a four-hour standoff in the parking lot of the cities Home Depot store.


It unfolded around 12:45 p.m. when Utica Police responded to the store for a 911 call of a man who locked himself inside of a vehicle and had a knife. 


Officers on scene have had no luck in getting the man out of the car safely without any potential injuries occurring, and negotiations began.


The man was allegedly intoxicated and was drinking alcohol during the standoff.


Sterling Heights Police was on scene to provide assistance.


The male has been transported to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation.


The parking lot to Home Depot is currently closed while the scene continues.
