LENOX TWP — The search for Ashley Elkins has intensified amid new developments from police to start off the week.
On Monday morning, roughly a dozen agencies gathered at the Pine Tree Acres Landfill in Lenox Township to begin a grid search in hopes of finding the body of Elkins.
The search consisted of dozers, drones, four dogs, and additional resources. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources also provided cadaver dogs to help with the search.
Authorities are narrowing the search area to about 7 acres in the landfill where they believe critical evidence involved in this case may be located.
Roseville Police is leading the search and took the weekend to prepare the site for digging and canvassing that started on Monday. Search efforts were halted Monday evening due to cold temperatures and the rugged terrain making it difficult to carry it out.
Roseville Police Chief Mitch Berlin said that crews will be back at the site on Tuesday to continue searching, and that the search should last an overall two to three days.
Berlin told the media that evidence found during the investigation in Roseville led them to the landfill, and that he believes evidence could be located in a six to seven acre parcel at the site.
He also stated that the search was heading in the right direction in terms of finding evidence and Ashleys body, as she is presumed deceased. Additionally, he said that he is confident that his team will find the evidence they are looking for during this search.
Elkins’ has been missing since early January and her ex-boyfriend is the main person of interest in her disappearance. He was arrested in Flint for lying to police during the criminal investigation and remains at the Macomb County Jail on a $250k bond.
Agencies involved in the search at the landfill include Chesterfield Twp Police, Shelby Twp Police, Michigan State Police, Warren Police, Macomb County Sheriff’s Office, the Macomb County Prosecutors Office, and a few more.
Updates will be provided via Macomb County News & Scanner as new information becomes available to the public.
