Uncooperative student with a stolen gun causes lockdown at Eastpointe High School

EASTPOINTE — A 16-year-old male student of Eastpointe High School is in police custody after bringing a stolen handgun to school Thursday morning.

Eastpointe Police says that their officers responded to the school around 8:00 a.m. after security was involved in a struggle with the student when they tried to disarm the student.

“When the student was entering the school, Security Officers, observed a bulge in his waistband. When asked to be checked with the metal detection wand, the student refused to cooperate,” police said in a news release.

“When the security guard attempted to retrieve the handgun from the student a struggle ensued,” the department stated.

The security guard was able to remove the handgun, which was reported stolen.

A brief lockdown occurred at the school but has since been lifted.

“Eastpointe PD wants to commend the school security officer for his vigilance and willingness to act to disarm the student. The security guards actions possibly prevented a tragic situation,” Eastpointe Police said.

The student is lodged at the Macomb Juvenile Justice Center while the Macomb County Prosecutors Office reviews the case for charges.
