Male taken into custody after short standoff with police in Shelby Township

SHELBY TWP — A man is in custody and receiving medical treatment after leading Shelby Township Police on a short standoff that lasted around 45 minutes around noon on Sunday, June 9.

Police responded to the home around 11:30am, located at the 47000 block of Robins Nest Drive, when a female called 911 reporting her son was in a bad state of mind and walking around the garage with a handgun. It’s believed that the male also has a history of attempting self-harm.

Police arrived to the scene and requested the male to exit the garage without any weapons, but he refused. He began walking around parts of the residence wearing a fanny pack, and with police still unsure if he had a firearm in his fanny pack.

Around 12:15pm, police deployed a less-lethal round that struck the man and ended the standoff. Shelby Township Firefighters made the scene to provide medical aid to the injured man.

The subjects mother was safely removed from the home by officers while she was locked inside of a room for the duration of the incident. She remained on the phone with police during the ordeal.

Dispatch audio also indicates that officers safely removed children from the home who were in the basement of the home at the time.

Police have not issued any information related to the incident and the investigation remains ongoing.
