Carnival at Independence Festival in Center Line shut down early on Saturday after 'unexpected events'

CENTER LINE — The Center Line Independence Festival closed its carnival early on Saturday after “unexpected events,” including physical altercations, occurred in the late afternoon and evening.

Center Line Department of Public Safety Police Officers made numerous arrests while responding to groups of unruly people and fights.

In one of the incidents, at Van Dyke south of 10 Mile Road, a group of females were beating on another female. Several aggressors fled the area prior to the arrival of police, but may have been identified by police after they received photos and/or videos of the fight, and those involved.

It’s unclear if those that fled were later caught, and the total number of arrests on Saturday is not known. We are told that a police officer may have sustained a foot injury during the incidents as well.

The Center Line Festival Foundation released a statement, stating “we have decided to shut down the Carnival early today to ensure the safety of our community and families.”

Additionally, all purchased wrist-bands for Saturday, June 1 will be honored until 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 2.

The Carnival is open from 12:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday.
