False report leads to Shelby Township home surrounded by heavily armed police officers

SHELBY TWP — A false alarm on Tuesday gathered a large police response including heavily armed officers in Shelby Township on Tuesday morning.

Although not much information is known, Shelby Township Police responded to the 4900 block of Robert Street around 10:30am Tuesday morning after receiving a call from a male stating that he had shot his aunt inside of the home.

As police arrived, the male caller stated that he no longer had the gun, but had a knife and would take his life if he saw police officers. In addition, he stated that he was no longer near his aunt and he wouldn’t check on her condition.

Heavily armed officers surrounded the home and began activating barricaded gunman protocol.

The situation came to an end around 11:30am when it was learned that the only occupant in the home was a female who was allegedly sleeping at the time. When she became aware that the home was surrounded by police, with the help of a phone call from her mother who wasn’t home at the time and has been in contact with police shortly after the incident began, she exited the home.

Officers determined that there was no shooting that occurred at the home.

Police didn’t say who made the phone call or if any arrests have been made in connection to the false report.

The situation is actively being investigated by police.
