Man out on bond causes fatal accident while intoxicated, attempts to carjack vehicle after fleeing crash scene

WARREN — On Saturday, January 21, Warren Police responded to 8 Mile Road and Groesbeck for a vehicle accident with injuries.

When officers had arrived, they learned that the driver of one of the vehicles involved had fled the scene.

Preliminary investigation revealed that 36-year-old Demetrius Benson, who was out on bond for Operating While Intoxicated, had run a red light while driving westbound on 8 Mile Road, and struck a car that was traveling southbound on Groesbeck.

Benson had run from the scene and attempted to carjack a van, but the driver of the van was able to pull him out of the van.

After being pulled out, Benson was ran over by another vehicle, causing both legs to be broken, as well as other injuries to Benson. Benson was transported to the hospital and is expected to survive.

Benson is being charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, driving while license is suspended causing death, attempted carjacking, possession of a controlled substance, and operating while intoxicated in the third degree.

Judge Chupa in the 37th district court has set Bensons bond at $500,000 cash/surety only, requiring no alcohol/drugs and a GPS tether if posted.
