Sterling Heights Police investigating verbal threat by Burr Elementary student

 


STERLING HEIGHTS — Sterling Heights Police says that they are investigating a threatening statement made by a 6th grade student at Burr Elementary, on Monday.


Another student told a teacher about the threatening statement which resulted in the 6th grader being removed from the building by police.


The following was sent to parents by Burr Elementary Administration: “I want to make you aware of a situation that occurred today that was addressed by our office and the Sterling Heights Police Department. A 6th grade student made a threatening statement during class. The individuals classmate reported this information to their teacher who reported it to the office.


The student is not in school and will receive consequences in accordance with our districts code of conduct. Please know that this remains an active investigation and we are not able to share additional information regarding the incident at this time. I appreciate your understanding.


Please talk with your children to emphasize that every threat is taken seriously and there are serious and life-changing consequences. “I didn’t think anyone would take me seriously” or “I meant it as a joke” are not acceptable answers. Threats to safety are not tolerated. Students who make threats may face both disciplinary action in school as well as prosecution by law enforcement. This includes verbal comments made in school and social media posts that are made and shared at home.


I believe it is important for you to be aware of what happened because we intend to keep Burr Elementary a safe place for students and staff. As always, we ask that you speak with your children about the need to immediately report any threat to school security that they come across. If you at any time have questions, please talk directly to us first regarding those concerns.”
