HARRISON TWP — Around 3:50am on Sunday, the Harrison Township Fire Department and Macomb County Sheriff’s Office we’re dispatched to the Village Green on Lake St. Clair apartment complex for a reported apartment fire.
Upon arrival of emergency services, flames were showing from a third floor unit.
Deputies entered the building and located the unit on fire, with thick black smoke showing.
Deputies began to evacuate the building as firefighters worked on the fire.
Selfridge ANG Fire Department and Clinton Township Fire Department were requested for additional resources.
Firefighters entered the unit and located 27-year-old Taryn Gainey with severe injuries, and she died at the hospital.
Nobody else was inside of the unit.
Multiple families were displaced due to the fire and several nearby residents were treated for minor smoke inhalation.
Foul Play is not expected and the cause of the fire was determined to be cooking-related.
