Man charged for pointing gun at Eastpointe Police officers, and then fleeing on foot

EASTPOINTE — On June 15, 2022, Eastpointe Police were working with Detroit Police on an operation to help curb crime in the area.

Eastpointe Police conducted a traffic stop on Gratiot Avenue north of 8 Mile Road, on a four-wheeler that was riding recklessly.

As officers approached the male, they saw a firearm in the waste-band of his shorts. Officers attempted to restrain him, but the male resisted.

The male, identified as 28-year-old Deaz Fitzgerald Titus Junior, of Detroit, was able to get the officers off of him but was quickly tased, causing him to lose balance and fall to the ground.

At this point, Titus pulled the firearm from him waste-band and pointed it at officers.

A second officer immediately deployed his taser which was ineffective on Titus.

Officers quickly retreated for their safety. Lethal Force wasn’t used due to high pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

Titus got back to his feet and fled on foot into a residential neighborhood

A perimeter was established and Detroit Police K-9 assisted with the search.

Within minutes, Titus was located and taken into custody inside of a garage in the residential neighborhood that he fled into.

The illegal firearm was recovered at the initial scene of the traffic stop.

Titus was arraigned on June 16 in the 38th District Court of Eastpointe and is facing charges of Assault on a Police Officer, Breaking and Entering, Felon in possession of a firearm, Felon in possession of ammunition, and Carrying a concealed weapon.

Titus is presumed innocent until proven guilty in the court of law.
